Bilibili region restricted overseas? What to do
Last updated: 11 July 2026
Watching Bilibili from abroad, some anime and films show “only available in mainland China”. Bilibili has two distinct region limits that need different handling. This page explains the difference, where mainland-direction routes apply, and how to troubleshoot playback quality.
Know which limit you hit
- Mainland-only: “only available in mainland China” — usually restored with a mainland-direction route.
- HK/MO/TW-only: mainland-direction routes do not apply — try the Hong Kong route instead (a public Hong Kong line is available); Taiwan-only titles need a Taiwan network environment, which is not currently available.
- Most regular content has no region limit; buffering is a network-quality issue, not a rights issue.
Common pain points
Restricted anime and films
Licensed content is region-bound; Bilibili detects your region from the network environment.
Peak-hour quality drops
Cross-border congestion makes 1080P+ buffer during evening peaks.
Live and exclusive content
Most livestreams are not region-limited; creator-exclusive content is account-bound, independent of the network.
Suggested steps
- Read the notice firstMainland-only and HK/MO/TW-only limits need different handling.
- Use a mainland-direction route for mainland-only titlesFully quit and reopen the app after connecting.
- Treat quality issues as network issuesSwitch routes at peak hours, check the local network, and lower quality to identify bandwidth bottlenecks.
Usage boundaries
- Catalogs and rights rules are decided by the platform; account and platform rules still apply after connecting.
- HK/MO/TW-only content requires a network environment in those regions: the Hong Kong route can be used to test titles marked HK/MO/TW-only; Taiwan-only titles are not currently covered. Whether a title plays is ultimately decided by the platform.
- Users should follow local laws and the terms of the target services.
FAQ
What is the difference between mainland-only and HK/MO/TW-only?
Mainland-only titles play in a mainland network environment and are usually restored by a mainland-direction route. HK/MO/TW-only titles need a network environment in those regions: try the Hong Kong route; Taiwan-only titles are not currently covered.
Still region-locked after connecting?
Fully quit and reopen the app, confirm the route direction is mainland, then check whether the title is HK/MO/TW-only or delisted.
Can I watch Bilibili livestreams overseas?
Most livestreams are not region-limited; the main issue is peak-hour buffering, which is a network-quality problem you can improve by switching routes.
